Web developers should keep an eye on the Interop 2022 benchmark to make life easier

Browser engine makers Google, Mozilla, and Apple, along with Bocoup, Igalia, and Chromium refurbisher Microsoft have teamed up to create the Benchmark Interop 2022.

The benchmark has 15 focus areas and includes five carried over from Compat 2021 efforts.

For mobile developers, the most exciting of the domains will be the added new window height and window width units to determine the largest, smallest, and most dynamic size of a dimension when scrolling – this is necessary because mobile browsers hide the address bar when scrolling.

Other areas of interest will be cascading layers, getting container queries to know the dimensions of a container in order to apply styles to work properly, the dialog element, fixes to forms, sub -grid, a group described as web compatibility issues.

“Unlike the others, the Web Compat area does not represent a specific technology, but is a group of specific known issues with functionality already shipped, where we see bugs and deviations from standards causing frequent site crashes for end users,” Mozilla said in its blog post.

The five areas of Compat 2021 are aspect ratio, flexbox, grid, sticky positioning, and transformations.

Additionally, three areas of investigation have been identified, but there is currently no clear path forward.

“These are areas that are problematic and need improvement, but where the current state of specs or testing is not yet good enough to be able to grade progress using test results,” Google noted.

“Browser vendors and other stakeholders will work together to improve testing and specifications for these areas, so they can be included in future iterations of this effort.”

Microsoft said it would be mostly focused on the subnetbut since it relies on Google’s engine, it can leave the heavy lifting to others while enjoying the benefits.

Scores for each browser engine can be tracked at dashboardwith Firefox leading on stable and development versions of browsers.

On stable builds, Firefox currently scores a nice 69, Chrome/Edge are slightly behind 61, while Safari has made minimal effort to get to 50. For development builds, Firefox Nightly scores 74, Safari Technology Preview is just behind on 73, and Chrome/Edge are on 71.

10% of the score comes from the joint investigation areas, but since no score has yet been assigned, the browser manufacturers are fighting for the remaining 90% which is distributed 60% in new areas, and 30% on Compat 2021 areas.

“Essentially, the goal is to make the web platform more usable and reliable for developers, so they can spend more time building great web experiences instead of working around browser inconsistencies,” Google said. .
