Major hotel chain drops Windows for Chrome OS after ransomware attack
Windows PCs are popular, especially for ransomware opportunists. This is largely why Nordic Choice Hotels decided to ditch Windows.
In December 2021, the hotel chain suffered a ransomware attack that threatened to cripple its infrastructure. However, since the chain was already piloting its CloudReady migration from Windows to the Chrome OS ecosystem, it simply shifted the plan into high gear ahead of schedule and within 72 hours of the ransomware strike, 2,000 PCs in 212 hotels and five countries have been converted (via Mynewsdesk).
Nordic Choice Hotels appears to be happy with their exchange and shows no signs of considering a return to Windows, at least for the foreseeable future.
It’s no secret that Windows is a ransomware magnet. According to VirusTotal, 95% of all ransomware attacks attack the Microsoft operating system. And anyone who follows Windows news has likely seen the many ransomware reports raining down on the operating system parade wherever they can, including when it comes to pedestrian functions like Windows-based printing.
As such, it’s no surprise that a company unwilling to tolerate the headaches of ransomware decides to ditch the operating system altogether and go for a more secure alternative, assuming it doesn’t. does not need specific features offered by Windows.
Microsoft and Google have a habit of attacking each other on products and pointing out the disadvantages of their competitors. However, the debate becomes a bit more thorny when it comes to ransomware since in this department (almost) all major roads lead to Redmond.
