Google Drive on ChromeBook – extremely unreliable
Using a Samsung ChromeBook, version 2020 that is kept up to date with all operating system and application updates. I have owned it for the last 3 versions of ChromeOS and the problems just keep getting worse; same problems, just more frequent.
Problems:
- open a .txt file through the Text app or Files app and about 90% of the time a different file is opened. Try again and it switches to another file. It goes on and on. It only works correctly about 10% of the time whereas with ChromeOS 89 it would open the right file about 50% of the time. ChromeOS 90 was worse than 89, but persistent opening would eventually open the file correctly. With 91, once he fails he always fails.
- open a file through the text app and it displays the correct filename but the file is empty. Check the file with my Samsung phone or Windows desktop and you’re good to go. Go back to the Chromebook and the file is empty. This is new with ChromeOS 91 and happens whether the file is old (weeks) or new. Open it over and over, up to 10 times, and it’s empty every time. Since 91, the correct file is never opened.
- saving a GIF from a web page gets corrupted approximately 75% of the time. This is new with ChromeOS 91. JPGs are well saved.
- sometimes it doesn’t save a PDF at all, but that’s rare.
I have no problem with any of these functions on my Windows machine or my Samsung phone, different apps of course.
I often turn off the ChromeBook completely, not just the cover. I have performed the full diagnostic tests several times, everything is fine. Very little RAM or storage used. Shutting down and restarting never helps.
What am I doing wrong?
